You might say that Southern California native David Jay was destined to work in the DJ business. Fortunately, he happened to be born with the DJ name. At just two years old, he got his hands on some premium vinyl and took to the streets of Los Angeles to find a turntable.
Surrounded by a family of talented singers and musicians that included his father, aunt and uncle, all RCA recording artists, David soon found his niche as a radio DJ on two local Thousand Oaks stations, KDSK FM and KDNF AM. He also founded KTO, the on-campus station at his high school. During those formative years, David established himself as an industrious musicologist, educating himself about the latest bands, labels, trivia and technology.
This insatiable desire for knowledge and new skills would soon become a hallmark of his career. He grew passionate about all kinds of sounds from standards to hip-hop; the Beatles to Electric Light Orchestra; the reigning idols to the one-hit wonders. As a boy, David fell in love with 93 KHJ Los Angeles, the classic Top 40 station, drawing inspiration from L.A. radio’s brightest stars: The Real Don Steele, Robert W. Morgan, Charlie Tuna, Machine Gun Kelly, Humble Harve and the brilliant Rick Dees.
David might have continued his rise on the radio had not a strange, fortuitous event occurred one night during his sophomore year. His radio buddy Mark owned a small DJ company and asked if he would help host an anniversary party. “It’s just like being on the air,” Mark assured David, “only with a live audience in front of you.”
Mark convinced his new protégé to cover his post for an hour while he ran an errand. To David’s surprise, Mark never returned, leaving David alone to DJ a four-hour set on his first night out. David rose to the challenge, however, instantly channeling his natural affinity for reading a live crowd. He loved the enthusiasm and immediate response he got from the audience as he rocked the dance floor. With his warmhearted charm and irresistible gift of gab, David quickly had everyone on their feet, laughing, dancing and having the time of their lives.
By the end of the evening, he knew he had discovered an exciting new direction in life. He was hooked. The next week when Mark called and asked if the younger turntablist wanted to purchase all his mobile DJ equipment, David hardly paused to consider how he would pay for the gear. “I’m in!” he exclaimed. The rest, as they say, is history.
